SCHOLARSHIP OVERVIEW

Before applying for ANY scholarships, make sure there is no cost to apply. Scholarship scams abound: If it sounds too good to be true – it probably is.

FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

This application unlocks the door to possible federal aid, such as a Pell Grant, Work Study and the Oregon Opportunity Grant. Both are determined by financial need. Apply at www.fafsa.ed.gov

  • Oregon Promise  -- Covers cost of tuition at Oregon community colleges for qualified students; apply at www.OregonPromise.org

  • Oregon Office of Student Access & Completion (OSAC) Scholarship DatabaseMore than 500 scholarships with a single application. To apply, set up account at https://app.oregonstudentaid.gov/

  • College – Offer merit scholarships based on academics and need-based grants;

        Offer scholarships through their school’s foundation/endowments. This information is generally located in the Financial Aid section of college websites.

  • Scholarship Search Engines—where you answer questions about yourself and goals, and are then matched to fitting scholarships. These can be found at:

Industries and Associations often offer scholarships to students going into a particular field. Be sure to check industry groups for scholarships.

Local Scholarships – This list of awards open to YCHS students and sponsored by community groups, such as Lions, Rotary, alumni, businesses, etc,. becomes available around the first of February. Applications will be posted in the hall near the ASPIRE office.

Tiger Times and ASPIRE bulletin board in hallway – Scholarships that come to our attention are carried in Tiger Times each week and are posted near ASPIRE until their deadline.

Job Corps -- http://www.jobcorps.gov/home.aspx  Free education and training program that helps young people learn a career, earn a high school diploma or GED, and find and keep a good job

Oregon Nurseries Foundation scholarships for students preparing for education and careers in ornamental horticulture and related fields. Several awards are available, ranging from $500 to $1,500. Deadline is April 15More Information

The Oregon State Attorney General and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission have issued warnings and taken action against companies that "guarantee" scholarships by offering a for-a-fee scholarship search services.

  • Buick Achievers Scholarship: up to $100,000 for those pursuing a career in engineering, technology or design, with an interest in the automotive industry. DEADLINE: February 29, 2016 (5:00 p.m. EST)
  • Doug Lemley Memorial Scholarships: $1,000 from the Oregon School Facilities Management Association. Successful candidates will be pursuing an area of study that will enhance their abilities in Facilities Management, Support Operations, Engineering, or Technology. DEADLINE: March 1, 2016.   • American Legion Scholarship: $1,000. Get paperwork from the ASPIRE office. DEADLINE: March 1.
  • Schweiger Memorial Scholarship for those going into construction or related fields. More information on advanced-american.com.
  • Scholarships for Native American students at Catching the Dream. Contact Joy Noll at Nscholarships@aol.com        
  • Get your creative on with a career in fashion, interior or graphic design, visual communications, digital media, fashion merchandising, or product development at FIDM. Apply for a one-year scholarship for tuition, fees and books at http://www.fidm.edu/go/fidmscholarships by April 30.
  • Astanza Q-Switched Laser Tattoo Removal Scholarship. $2,500. 3.0 GPA -- pursing studies in physics, biology, engineering, medicine, nursing. Apply online. DEADLINE: June 30.
  • Cattle-, sheep-, swine-, and horse-related scholarships and INTERNSHIPS are also available through many industry groups. Get info from Ms. Spearman or in ASPIRE.

  • 2016 Oregon Jaycee Foundation Scholarship: One-time grant for $1,500. GPA of 3.7 unweighted Academic Excellence, personal accomplishments, leadership qualities and community service. Requires transcript, description of extracurricular activities, and 350-word essay. NOT an online application. Ask for application at the ASPIRE Office. DEADLINE: April 25.

  • Increase your money savvy and apply for U.S. Bank Scholarship at the same time. $5,000. Apply online. DEADLINE: Sept. 17
  • 2016 Scholarship Points Awards - $10,000 - 10 Awards (Deadline: April 30, 2016). Open to any student over 13 enrolled or with plans to enroll in a U.S. college. Applications can be found here.
  • E-Waste Scholarship - 1,000 - 1 Award (Deadline: April 30). Eligible students must be high schoolers entering college or graduate school. Homeschooled students are also eligible. Applications can be found here.
  • Paradigm Challenge Scholarship - $100.00 - 100 Awards (Deadline: May 1, 2016). Eligible students must be aged 7 to 18 as of May 1, 2015 and have their parents/legal guardians' permission. Applications can be found here.

  • LGMD Awareness Scholarship - 3,000 - 4 Awards (deadline: May 25, 2016). LGMD Awareness Scholarship was designed to reward students who teach others about Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrpohies. More Information and applications can be found here.

    Local community scholarships available to YCHS seniors are posted here in February each year.

    Most have deadlines in April and May.
